Louis Stokes, 27, was sentenced on Tuesday, Sept. 24 to five years in state prison, the Atlantic City Police Department said in a news release on Wednesday, Oct. 9. He must serve about four years and three months before he's eligible for parole.
Atlantic City police found a gunshot victim on Sewell Avenue just before midnight on Friday, Oct. 14, 2022. The man was shot once in the leg and he survived his injuries.
Eight fired 9mm shell casings were discovered nearby in the area of Pennsylvania and Adriatic avenues. Police learned through surveillance video that a group of men was in the area of the shooting before hiding inside a home together.
Stokes was arrested after he left the home and officers recovered three guns, including a stolen 9mm pistol. A ballistics laboratory later determined the pistol was used in the shooting.
Investigators said the 9mm gun was hidden outside a second-floor window on an outdoor windowsill. Stokes' DNA was on two of the guns and a witness identified him as the shooter.
Stokes pleaded guilty on Thursday, July 25 to second-degree aggravated assault, possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose, and third-degree hindering apprehension. When entering his plea, Stokes admitted to shooting the victim and hiding the gun to avoid being arrested.
Stokes will have "intensive" parole supervision for three years once he's released from prison.
